NEIL CONN

I was stationed at Hurlburt Field in 2021. My wife, our two kids, and I moved to Gulf Breeze and immediately fell in love with the area and proudly call it home. I retired in 2025 after 20 years in the Air Force and was ready to start the next chapter of my life.

After retiring, I went to work for a big-name patio company and learned the business firsthand. It didn’t take long for me to realize there was an opportunity to do things differently: provide the same great patio transformations with exceptional quality, more affordable options, and a much more personal experience. That idea became part of what inspired Throwing Shade.

I spent 20 years learning the importance of doing things the right way, taking pride in your work, and taking care of the people around you. I want to bring those same values to Throwing Shade. When we come to your home, our goal isn’t just to complete another job, it’s to treat you like family, listen to what you actually want, and build something we’d be proud to have at our own home.

In 2017, I did what any reasonable man would do. I packed up my family, left St. Louis, Missouri, and headed for the Emerald Coast. What started as a leap of faith quickly became home. I’m a husband and proud father of three, and building a life here on the Gulf Coast with them is one of the things I’m most proud of.

My path to Throwing Shade started when I was managing the Southeast region for a large corporate shade company. Not long after, I brought my good friend Neil on board to work alongside me. Together, we learned the trade, gained invaluable experience, and fell in love with the business. But we also saw an opportunity to do things differently.

We believed homeowners deserved more than a sales pitch and an invoice. They deserved honesty, integrity, quality work, and people who genuinely cared about the end result. Neil and I realized we had the experience and shared values to build exactly that.

That’s how Throwing Shade was born. We specialize in patio shades and screens, but at our core, we’re a customer service company built around taking care of people and standing behind our work.

This is our home too. We live here, we raise our families here, and we’re proud to serve the Gulf Coast communities we call home. We’d be honored to earn your business, and even more proud to earn your trust.
